Sixth Street to Close March 1

Downtown Links Constructors (DLC), under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility have begun work on the Downtown Links project.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians should anticipate intermittent lane restrictions throughout the limits of the project in addition to the following upcoming work (See Map):

On Friday afternoon, February 26, Stone Avenue is scheduled to open to one travel lane in each direction between Fourth Street and Sixth Street. Traffic will shift to the west side of the roadway while underground work and the reconstruction of Stone Avenue continues along the east side of the roadway. This traffic shift will be in place through mid-May.

On Monday, March 1, Sixth Street is scheduled to close to all motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists between Sixth Avenue and Stone Avenue (access to businesses will be maintained). This closure allows the contractor to install the underground drainage structure across the roadway. The closure will be in place through mid-May.

During this work, the following travel restrictions will be in place:

  • Northbound and southbound pedestrian access will only be permitted along the west side of Stone Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street.
  • Bicyclists will need to travel in the northbound and southbound travel lanes on Stone Avenue. Motorists and bicyclists are asked to share the road.
  • Fifth Street at Stone Avenue will be closed during the Stone Avenue traffic shift.
  • Beginning Monday, March 1, eastbound and westbound turn movements will not be permitted from northbound Stone Avenue to Sixth Street; eastbound turn movements will not be permitted from southbound Stone Avenue to Sixth Street.
  • Motorists traveling westbound on Sixth Street will be directed to use either northbound or southbound Sixth Avenue to detour around the
  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Sixth Street will be directed to use either northbound or southbound Stone Avenue to detour around the closure.
  • Echols Avenue remains closed between Fifth Street and Sixth Street.
  • Pedestrian access will be allowed between Seventh Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

The current closure of Church Avenue between Sixth Street and Franklin Street has been extended to approximately July 2021. Ninth Avenue between Sixth and Franklin streets is also closed. These closures are in place while the contractor completes underground infrastructure upgrades/improvements, retaining walls, curb and sidewalk, and paving.

The 30-month construction project is scheduled for completion in early 2023.

The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

The Regional Transportation Authority, a political subdivision of the state and independently governed, has invested more than $1.2 billion in transportation projects and services to improve mobility, safety, economic vitality and quality of life in the region. The RTA collects a half-cent excise (sales) tax from its special taxing district within Pima County to fund its 20-year regional transportation plan. The plan and tax were approved by voters in May 2006. The Downtown Links project is part of the RTA plan and is managed by the City of Tucson. For more information, visit www.RTAmobility.com
